AI friend of foe?

There is a lot of noise online now about AI. It feels like everyone is either selling it or slating it. In the design industry it’s a scary thing, some are embracing it, others are staying well clear, but many are unsure where to draw the line. One thing I have noticed is that the results coming from AI software is below par. You could hypothesise about whether it’s the systems or the human behind the keyboard, but the truth is, it has a long way to go before it can be your standalone marketer, designer, writer, proofreader, even accountant.

I don’t know where I stand with it at the moment, I would be naïve to assume it will just go away or that it isn’t a fascinating advance in technology, but as a flower farmer/graphic designer, I felt the incredible pressure of lack of water this summer. I could see first-hand the negative effect it had on wildlife and soil health, and to be harvesting much needed water (clean water at that) to cool down machines doesn’t sit quite right with me. I have read case studies on the water load, one comparing it to ‘only one hour of Netflix streaming per response’ per response. This is obviously fluctuating evidence, but the average person asks AI a question every 10 seconds. Using this comparison across the hour its 3,600 hours of Netflix/streaming, all the time taking precious water resources. There is a clear shift going on, those who are passionate about reducing carbon footprint and climate change are shunning AI, those who are…less concerned are not. If you are the former, I have created five top tips for how to market your business visually, listing them, in my opinion, from the most ethical to the least. Check them out, and if you want to discuss either side and what it means for your business, feel free to get in contact!
